How can I prevent drafts from my basement fireplace?

I bought a house built in approx 1980, 4 yrs ago. The basement fireplace has no damper causing cold air to infiltrate and also back draft to upstairs fireplace. The home inspector never advised me of this problem-What can I do?

Most importantly, you need to hire a licensed, insured fireplace/mechanical installer to replace the damper, which can be costly and not truly solve your issue. You could purchase an insert( wood, pellet or corn burner) You could also purchase and install "lock-top-dampers" on both fireplaces. When the fireplace is not in use or in the closed position, it will not let air or unwelcomed furry or winged visitors in.
