What tiles can be used for my fireplace, porcelain or ceramic?

My husband just installed a cool wood fireplace mantle and would like to tile around the fireplace opening and hearth. Some people say natural stone is best; others say porcelain or ceramic would be just fine. We already have ceramic and porcelain tiles that we could use. Which tiles, porcelain or ceramic, can be used safely?

To my knowledge, both types of tile can be used with no substantial issues with heat tolerance.
