I can put new shingles on top of my old shingles?

My family lives in Queens, NY and I have a home built in 1952, and I need a new roof. Can you apply new shingles right over old ones with out removing them?

Most roofers would not advise this-if properly installed, a single layer should be sufficient. Building codes in New York State permit a maximum of two layers of roofing shingles. There are some instances where it would not be advisable to install them as a second layer. If you are experiencing ice problems or the shingles have become very distorted, a second layer should not be added. You will probably experience a shorter life span that would be shorter than the shingles written warranty when they are installed as a second layer.
