You should first contact your local water dept. to inquire if recent work has been done on a water main. It may have broken has been polluted with back fill. You can also have your tap water tested for pollutants by the health dept or a local lab for minimal fee. Until you can determine the safety of your tap water, I wouldn't consume it.
