I have an old kitchen floor where the old vinyl tiles are missing, damaged and filthy. The subfloor is pretty intact though. Some moistur damage under the dishwasher though, where it leaked. It's been replaced, so no more leak!. What can I do to make the floor new without having a tearout and big mess?

A bleach spot is an area where the spilled bleach has removed the dye from the carpet fiber. You'll have to find a carpet cleaning company that has a specialist who knows how to re-dye the affected area using an extractor. If this doesn't work, you'll just have to replace the carpet in that particular room.

You can use a great solvent called Paso, designed to clean acrylic surfaces without damaging them. If the wax has clogged the drainage system or the rotating jet arm, you'll have to disassemble them and soak them in a solvent like Paso to soften and flush these systems. Be sure to disconnect the power before commencing.

In most cases, yearly maintenance may reveal small cracks that can be painted over with 'pool-paint', which is specially made with a thick, durable rubber base that will seal hairline cracks for some time. If you have opened cracks that are causing allot of water loss, the solution may require applications or excavations that are better handled by specialists experienced in pool repair. In this manor, you can also receive a written guarantee.

The best way to clean your old oak cabinet surfaces would be to use a product called Paso. It is especially made to clean and refurbish fiberglass and acrylic shower and hot tub surfaces without dulling the surface. Depending on the finish coat (IE..lacquer, polyurethane), Paso may or may not dull the finish, along with removing years of grease. In any case, once the surface has been renewed, a thin coat of clear finish can easily be applied with a soft brush, if necessary.

Pet waste cannot be removed from carpets. It would be better to remove them and restore or install a hard floor, if you plan on keeping the dog inside. Otherwise, your carpets will become a real health hazard for humans.

You should first contact your local water dept. to inquire if recent work has been done on a water main. It may have broken has been polluted with back fill. You can also have your tap water tested for pollutants by the health dept or a local lab for minimal fee. Until you can determine the safety of your tap water, I wouldn't consume it.

Purchase a set that has a carbide tip with a steel alloy shank. Avoid the cheaper bits made of soft alloys, as they will bend or warp and the tips will dull during the first usage. It is also rather important to use a drill with a 'hammer' adjustment. Your drilling will go much smoother and faster and the bits will last for many projects.

There are multiple things to consider when re-plastering a pool, including the expansiveness and severity of the damage your pool has. Some pools have plaster cracks in a few places that can merely be repaired by patching up the damaged areas. If you can post a photo or video of the offending area, I'd be happy to give you a more concrete answer. However, one thing to avoid is painting over the problem since this solution is extremely temporary. A lot of pool owners try this and don't think about paint durability under gallons of water and pool chemicals.

The one piece shower is made for new construction, since in most cases getting one through a 24" bathroom door might be impossible. I would recommend a three piece shower surround that can be sealed with 100% silicone caulk with mold resistant compounds. A decent brand carried by Home Depo or Lowe's will run around $400.00 (dollars), with three walls and a pan base. The draw back with acrylic or fiberglass surrounds is that you can't use lie soap or abrasive cleaning methods otherwise the sheen will turn dull in a very short period. As for your difficulty with tile and grout maintenance, a good weekly cleaning with a strong solution of bleach water will prevent scum and mold buildup, while not effecting the hard surface of ceramic or porcelain tile.

There are three things you can check. (1.)The valve may be clogged or the shut off valve beneath the toilet may be turned toward the off position; (2.)the chain that pulls the tank plug when you flush, may be hug up; (3.)...0r the tank plug itself may need to be replaced.

There is a venting problem. The vent pipe should be connected to the toilet pipe and rises up the wall behind the toilet, through the roof to provide a sufficient air flow that allows the water to move unrestricted. Either this vent is clogged or it may be an older iron vent that has rusted and clogged. Another possibility is that someone has recently done work in which he removed or damaged the vent. In any event, it must be determined whether the vent is to be repaired or replaced.

Purchase a staple gun (preferably electric) that uses a staple used for carpet and foam padding. One that has a narrow width, which will essentially disappear into the surrounding fiber when injected. I would additionally purchased carpeting made for use on stairways.

Even if your sun room has double paint glass, it will require sufficient heating to be suitable, depending on where you live. Depending on the square foot measurement of the room and the insulation factor, you may need a heating system separate from your central heating unit. If this wasn't considered when your room was built, you can have a qualified electrician or contractor install a 220VAC line to an electric room heater.

wood will be scratched by the claws of even a small cat or dog. The best floor is an engineered, floating floor, namely a Pergo or simular type, which has a surface made of tough plastic, like a kitchen counter top laminate.

The main consideration would be having a perceptibly smooth surface as a base. Whether you are laying the new floor over an existing or tearing down to the sub-floor - if the surface is rippled or bulging anywhere, steps should be taken to correct those areas before proceeding.

I think you should be concerned about smoke, in the event that the flu vent closes or a reversed draft occurs. A smoke detector placed 12 inches from the ceiling and a few feet to the side of the fireplace should provide functionality without being activated by some smoke which inevitably escapes any fireplace.

Hardwood must be stored in a dry facility. The new floor panels will come packaged and bound and should be placed on a series of 2x4's that will create a space for the air to move, as cement floors are porous and could warp wood placed directly upon it. Be sure to place the 2x4's so that there are enough to provide support without leaving wide gaps, or the floor boards will certainly warp.

It's serious if there is water leaking into the basement during rain pour. There are epoxy sealing products which may forestall more extensive remedies, like wall bracing and exterior excavation, aimed at sealing cracks in side walls from the outside, where repairs are most effective.

A traditional oak flooring wouldn't work on concrete. What you need is an engineered, floating floor, preferably with a built-in moisture barrier. I would look at the big variety offered by Bruce Flooring. They offer a huge variety of engineered floors panels, prefinished with moisture barrier from about $4.00 to $6.55 a square foot.

Additions like a sun-room might be considered less enhancing than a bedroom or other type of room expansion in my opinion. More importantly, at this time, when real estate has slumped and your planning on selling, I would remodel to enhance the possibility of "selling", rather then doing it for equity. Unless you are staying put for the next few years.

Apparently, you need to discover the source of the moisture build up in the room. Once remedied, you can clean the dead mold with ammonia and water mix, cover with Kilz and then repaint the room or primed area to match.
Answered by Tracy, administrative
Yes, as long as the older surface has been thoroughly cleaned of grease and the smallest dirt particles and dust just prior to applying new tile.

I would recommend a light mix of ammonia and water. Ammonia is the best grease cutter I know, that shouldn't damage an appliance that is coated with epoxy paint.

Your dryer duct should be clear if you're cleaning the lint filter before or after every load. If you inspect the duct and it is clogged, you may want to order a new lint filter or inspect the filter frame and holder to see if lint is escaping into the duct.

In many units, there is a small fan that feeds cold air from the freezer to the fridge. It may have become frozen due to ice build up. By removing the back panel inside the fridge (not freezer) the plastic fan will be exposed and can be cleaned of ice build up. If this happens often, try adjusting the moisture control to the summer setting (if the unit has one). Otherwise, there may be other problems, like a stuck defrost timer (not defrosting often enough).

Be careful of electrical wires and water or gas pipes that may be lurking where you need to cut. Use a drywall handsaw to make a hole a few inches wide in order to see what is there. Also, be aware of exterior structure like brick, which may have to be repaired.

I have seen quite a few outlet boxes with disposals plugged in, beneath the sink. In the event of a leak, not the best idea. The right way is to mount a sealable junction box and run a metal sheathed (armor cable) cord from the disposal to the junction box. From there, the use of regular house wire (NMB14/2 or NMB12/ with ground) from junction box to the breaker.

If the dryer uses gas heating, it must be vented to the exterior of the building. This can be done by simply creating a vent in the wall behind the machine. If your dryer uses an electric element there are no dangerous carbon fumes to worry about.

Remove the panels and allow to dry. If the walls aren't rotten, you can use 6-tubes of silicone and simple bracing to re-attach them. If walls are rotten and moldy, you'll have to cut them an inch below the panels and install green drywall. Then re-attach or replace the panels and caulk with white silicone.

Make sure your rain gutters are not clogged, and the drainage is away from your foundation- Patching the inside will only stop the leaks temporarily-the real issue is standing water around the foundation-remember, water is the most destructive force in nature!. Concrete breaks down and if you don't repair correctly leaks will continue.

Unfortunately, my friend, because it is fiberglass, you will have to replace the shower and the shower pan underneath.

Hopefully, your insurance-backed restoration company will do everything that is necessary to ensure that the mold will not spread. They would definitely be the right people to question, as all of these things are generally looked after by the time us flooring people start to help. If there is any additional damage to the subfloor or any mold present, document and report all findings to the restoration/insurance company before the new flooring goes in.

If you have not done so already, try to grade or create a slope away from the house so that rain run off is taken away from your foundation house. Get your pump repaired but the saturated soil is also a problem. Place a fan near the closet to dry out the carpet, so it will not develop mold.

A one-piece shower enclosure is great, however it will require professional installation or experienced handyman assistance. After they’re manufactured, they can usually be installed within a days work- they require minimal maintenance and believe they are made from acrylic plastic- You do have a couple of less expensive options in 3 piece or 5-piece shower enclosures. You should be able to install either of these by yourself. The downside is you will have vertical seams that you need to seal with caulk .

Well, it depends- if you can replace the valve from behind the wall (as through a closet). If it is the same style valve (example single handle) then it would be your option to replace the surround if needed. If it is not the same style or if the surround (tile) is of the same age as the faucet, replace the surround at the same time. If replacing it with ceramic tile be sure to use cement board as a base.

Acrylic shower pans are probably the best, because it costs more…just kidding, but it does last forever and keeps the gloss. Another advantage is that acrylic is non-porous, so mold grime and soap scum doesn’t work its way into the material. Fiberglass has a gel coat the wears off and exposes the fibers and that's why it goes bad after so many years. Fiberglass costs less, but cannot compete with acrylic when it comes to long lasting solutions.

Not necessary but highly reccommended...one of the best types is the cement board products readily available at most building centers, a little extra attention and expense now will ensure a trouble free shower in the future.

Relatively simple process-You can buy any Brick Sealer from a hardware store and use a brush to apply the seal to the bricks. In terms of cleaning, it depends on what you are cleaning from a brick. For a general cleaning, you can clean the bricks with a dry firm brush-try to do this before you apply the sealer

Always prime the tiles prior to painting. Home Depot carries a primer that would work on the tiles, then use any color you would like. Also, be sure that the paint is heat tempered.

Instead of the brick you could use natural field stone or something similar but that could be a lengthy and costly project. You could do it yourself but a local mason or brick layer could be of more assistance.

You can install new marble or granite on top of existing brick.

Most roofers would not advise this-if properly installed, a single layer should be sufficient. Building codes in New York State permit a maximum of two layers of roofing shingles. There are some instances where it would not be advisable to install them as a second layer. If you are experiencing ice problems or the shingles have become very distorted, a second layer should not be added. You will probably experience a shorter life span that would be shorter than the shingles written warranty when they are installed as a second layer.

I would recommend drilling the brick because the mortar joint will be weaker and might allow the mantel to come out of the mortar.

Most importantly, you need to hire a licensed, insured fireplace/mechanical installer to replace the damper, which can be costly and not truly solve your issue. You could purchase an insert( wood, pellet or corn burner) You could also purchase and install "lock-top-dampers" on both fireplaces. When the fireplace is not in use or in the closed position, it will not let air or unwelcomed furry or winged visitors in.

There are many things that you can do to prolong the life of your roof, like don't plant trees too close to the house. Cut the branches of mature trees that touch the roof or hang over it. Moss growing on roof traps moisture and rots the shingles. Remove it with a solution of equal parts chlorine bleach and water. Don't do it yourself unless you are sure you'll be safe climbing up on the roof. Check the roof after a storm to be sure that shingles were not blown off. Have missing shingles replaced. Keep the gutters clean, twice a year or more.

There are several variables to consider- First and foremost the geographical area your home is in will dictate the resale value of your home. If you put a tin roof on in an area where there is virtually none around this could actually hurt the value of your home. Tin roofs can be extremely more expensive than dimensional roofs. Just like a swimming pool, it is nice to have but does not raise the value of a property and in some cases will actually hurt the value of your property. The exception of course to my opinion is if all the houses around you have metal roofs conformity would be the obvious choice. Partner with your local realtor to gain there input before this decision to make sure can recoup your investment. Good luck!

Yes it should. Water stains indicate damage to drywall because the water has penetrated all the way through to create the stain on the ceiling and no amount of painting will make it go away. Since you say the contractors "took forever" to remove the insulation, my bet is that there might be some mold growth where it was the wettest for the longest amount of time since, generally speaking, untreated water problems can lead to mold growth in as little as 3 days. Of course there are other environmental factors involved and, without a visual inspection, I can't tell you if this has happened. That being said, my recommendation is to take out the wet drywall and see what is there. If what is above the ceiling is dry, if nothing else, you will be removing the stains once and for all.

Well, first takethe time to remove the old surface tiles by using a stiff drywall spreader or wide wood chisel. You can isntall a thin backer board like Luan (4x8x 1/8th"). Screw it down with 1 5/8th drywall screws, then you can apply self stick tiles or even better, a floating snap together floor like Pergo or Bruce Flooring.
