I don't see much of wallpaper anymore. Especially in the newest homes. And in perhaps most older homes it is painted over. Still, there are decor designers who recommend it for various cozy effects. I personally think that perceptionally, wallpaper is best suited for large rooms with tall ceilings, at least 9 feet and taller. I also recommend using indirect or sconce lights or even small can lights around the perimeter of the room to highlight areas of the wall.
One of my favorite types are those with an old-world or Asian designs. I don't like ceiling borders, but I do recommend a wainscot, such as a pecan stained beaded wood about 40" - 48", especially with antique furniture. In a large room, a prism chandelier also accents various aspects of the wall design.
There are also wall size wall murals, such as the Thomas Kinkade Portofino collection, featuring for example - an Italian fishing village wall paper mural of 12' W X 9' H, which would compliment an average dinning room.
