Septic tanks are often neglected or even damaged as a result of knowledge lacking. The principle is that the drain field must not collapse or become clogged with sludge. The best way to keep a drain field and tank from sludging and backing into the main drain system connected to the home, is to allow the natural process of bacteria which consumes waste and solids.
There are some good bacteria formulas on the market that can be added periodically. Perhaps even more importantly, is the fact that the best way to maintain a septic system is not to allow the wrong things to be washed or flushed into the drain. Harsh cleaners or chemical drain uncloggers for example. Even things like coffee grinds, meat fat, used cooking grease, paper towels, feminine products and disposable diapers - to name a few.
Septic systems can operate well for decades. They can also become clogged with sludge if not properly maintained and must be pumped at a cost. If the problem persists, it may have to be replaced at a cost of thousands of dollars.
